So, why did our friend keep on coming round night after night, day after day…..
I didn’t consider myself to be a bad person and certainly not a sinner. Oh, I might have told the odd ‘white lie’ (whatever that is meant to be – I don’t know where it says that lies come in particular colours!!) and taken a couple of pens home from the office to use for my personal use, but I didn’t rob banks; steal cars or murder anyone. So by that measure I was quite good!
Our friend pointed out a scripture in Romans 3 v 23 which says: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Now I guess all – referring to the whole of the human race – includes me. How would I measure myself against the glory of God? God is perfect, and according to this scripture I fell short – which meant to me that I was away from God and I didn’t want to be away from Him.
But, Jesus died for our sins so that makes everything ok, doesn’t it?
John 14 v 6 says Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”
John 5 v 39 & 40 says You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life and these are they which testify of Me, but you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
Now then, these verses tell me that I have to look at Jesus in a different way. Yes, Jesus did die for our sins, but He says that no one comes to the Father except through Him and then we have to be willing to ‘come to Him’.
This is now made personal. Yes I was going to church, I was praying but now I see that this wasn’t enough and neither would it lead me to God because I still fell short. And because I still saw Jesus’ death and resurrection as for mankind in general, which just happened to include me, I knew then that I had to see further than Jesus dying for us.
Eventually, I could see that Jesus is the only way to our Father in Heaven and without Him I cannot go there. Without Him, I could not recognise my sin especially if I thought I was doing everything right.
At last, I was able to see and to know that Jesus died for me so I could have a personal relationship with Him and our Father in Heaven. Once I had made Jesus my personal Lord and Saviour life became worth living. I now have a personal relationship and a trust in Jesus that no man can ever steal away from me.
So, this is why our friend kept on coming round…. To help me see my need and my desire for a personal relationship with the King of Kings.
